The Cardinals added another first baseman to the mix on Wednesday, activating Matt Adams from the 60-day disabled list after more than a three month absence following surgery to repair a quad strain. To clear room for Adams on the 40-man roster, the team designated lefty Nick Greenwood for assignment.
Coming off a career-best 2014 season in which he slashed a 288/.321/.457 line with 15 home runs and 34 doubles, Adams, 27, was hitting a disappointing .243 with four home runs and 20 RBI through 43 games before tearing his quad in late May. The first baseman missed a total of 91 games on the disabled list.
Initially facing the prospect of being sidelined for the rest of the year, Adams progressed better than expected in his recovery, participating in sprints by mid-August. He did experience tightness in his non-surgically repaired leg early last week, but the injury was not deemed serious.
With the addition of Brandon Moss, the return of Randal Grichuk, the presence of Mark Reynolds, and Stephen Piscotty’s great performance, the Cardinals can afford to ease Adams back into game action. MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch reports that while Adams was not cleared to play the field upon his activation, he will be able to serve as a pinch-hitter for the time being.
Recalled twice to the majors this season, Greenwood did not appear in a game on either occasion. The 27-year-old lefty compiled a 13-6 record with a 5.79 ERA over 32 games at AAA Memphis.
