Cardinals hire Bill Mueller as new assistant hitting coach

The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Monday that they have hired 43-year-old former Boston Red Sox third baseman and Chicago Cubs hitting coach Bill Mueller to serve as the team’s new assistant hitting coach following the departure of bench coach Mike Aldrete for the Oakland Athletics.

Aldrete’s departure lead to the promotion of assistant hitting coach David Bell to bench coach, leaving the position open for Mueller, who has served as a hitting coach for both the Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers as well as working some in the front office.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, GM John Mozeliak met with Mueller just this last week in Arizona about the job, and shortly after the meeting the club offered him the position.

Mueller played for four different major league teams throughout his career and was part of the 2004 World Champion Boston Red Sox, who swept the Cardinals in the World Series.
