Just a few days after being designated for assignment to make room for two of the Cardinals’ trade acquisitions, reliever Marcus Hatley and first baseman Dan Johnson have been outrighted to AAA Memphis after passing through waivers unclaimed.
Hatley, who was unscored upon in two appearances during his brief time with the Cardinals, was designated on Friday to clear room on the 40-man roster for Jonathan Broxton, acquired that day in a trade with Milwaukee. The 27-year-old will serve as bullpen depth for the organization at Memphis.
The 35-year-old Johnson found himself without a roster spot on Thursday after the team’s deal to acquire first baseman/outfielder Brandon Moss from the Cleveland Indians. In 19 at-bats with the big-league club this year, the veteran of 10 MLB seasons had just three hits to go along with four strikeouts. He’ll return to a .242/.350/.427 slash line with 11 home runs and 44 RBI at the AAA level.
