One day after placing Adam Wainright on the disabled list with mid-back tightness, the Cardinals announced a corresponding roster move Wednesday afternoon, recalling right-hander Mike Mayers from AAA Memphis.
Mayers, however, will not assume Wainright’s spot in the rotation, but rather provide (possibly short-term) depth in the bullpen. Left-hander Luke Weaver, who was at Busch Stadium prior to Wednesday night’s game, is expected to start for the Cardinals on Thursday against the Diamondbacks in what would have been Wainright’s turn.
Mayers, 25, has made 15 starts for Memphis this season, although his last four appearances have been in relief. He’s pitched to a collective 5-6 record with a 3.92 ERA.
Weaver, meanwhile, was scratched from his scheduled start for the AAA team Tuesday night shortly after the news of Wainwright’s injury broke. The 23-year-old boasts an stellar 9-1 record and 1.91 ERA across 66 innings at Memphis.
