One day after picking up his first major league win on Friday, lefty Tim Cooney was optioned to AAA Memphis to clear room on the Cardinals roster for the newly acquired Steve Cishek. Just a few days later, on Monday, the 24-year-old was placed on the minor-league disabled list due to appendicitis, MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch reports.
In six spot starts for the Cardinals this job, Cooney has certainly impressed, posting a 3.17 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 29 strikeouts over 31 1/3 innings. It’s not clear how long he’s expected to be sidelined.
Jaime Garcia is taking the rotation spot previously held by Cooney, and will start Tuesday against the Reds at Busch Stadium.
Harris activated, joins Memphis team
On Monday, the Cardinals also activated right-hander Mitch Harris, out since early June with a groin strain, from the 15-day DL and optioned him to AAA Memphis. As Langosch notes, the 29-year-old has made four rehab appearances with Memphis over roughly the last week. Harris holds a good 3.10 ERA but poor 11/10 K/BB ratio over 20 1/3 big-league innings this season.
