After making his first start since July on Wednesday, Matt Holliday was not in the lineup Thursday night as the Cardinals kicked of a four game series against the Brewers. But as Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch explains, the day of rest was a planned one as the team works to ease the veteran back into regular playing time following multiple quad strains. Holliday didn’t experience any soreness following Wednesday’s game and will likely be back in the starting lineup on Friday.
A few more quick notes…
- Cards ace Adam Wainwright threw a 25-pitch simulated game on Wednesday as he continues his improbable return from a torn Achilles in 2015. Attempting to return as a reliever this season, Wainwright recovered well from the session (as Goold reports) and will throw another some time this weekend. Assuming all goes well, the 34-year-old could be considered for game action next week during the club’s final road trip of the regular season.
- Designated for assignment to clear room for rookie catcher Travis Tartamella on the major-league roster, first baseman Xavier Scruggs cleared waivers and was sent outright to AAA Memphis. Scruggs, who turned 28 on Wednesday, has seen minimal action at the big-league level over the past few years, but has posted solid power numbers in the minors and will stick around for now as organizational depth.
