Update: Jay was activated from the disabled list prior to Friday’s series opener against the Pirates

Sidelined since the end of June with a stress reaction in his surgically-repaired left wrist, outfielder Jon Jay is “expected” to be activated from the disabled list on Friday prior to the start of the Cardinals’ weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch reports.

Jay has thus far played in three games while on a rehab assignment at AAA Memphis, collecting a hit in four of his last six at-bats, including a home run. The 30-year-old was hitting just .223/.311/.265 prior to going down, but his lingering injury likely contributed to his poor performance. Jay hold a career .289 batting average at the major-league level.

COONEY SHUT DOWN

On a less promising note, left-hander Tim Cooney, who required an emergency appendectomy in late July, has been shut down for the season.

“Three weeks of laying off, from a physical standpoint, has not put him in a position where he can contribute,” general manager John Mozeliak told the Post-Dispatch on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old posted a 2.74 ERA and 63/16 K/BB ratio this season in 88 2/3 innings at Memphis this season and also impressed in six spot starts for the big-league club.

HOLLIDAY TAKES BP

Left fielder Matt Holliday, working his way back from his second quad strain of the year, took batting practice with the team on Wednesday but is still limited as far as running, Langosch reports.

No timetable for his return has been announced.

GREENWOOD OPTIONED

Nine hours after being recalled to provide insurance for Wednesday starter Tyler Lyons, left-hander Nick Greenwood was optioned to AAA Memphis after last night’s series finale against the Nationals.

In 31 games (21 starts) at Memphis this season, the 27-year-old Greenwood posted a 12-6 record with a 5.68 ERA.
