As the annual MLB Winter Meetings continue this week in San Diego, here’s a quick look at a few of the latest rumors and rumblings on the Cardinals:
- Stan McNeal of Fox Sports Midwest and Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Tuesday evening that the Cardinals have had some internal discussions about having outfielder Stephen Piscotty, recently named as the club’s number one prospect, play some at first base, according to team General Manager John Mozeliak. Goold writes that the club is looking for some protection for Matt Adams at first base, but with the news on Piscotty it appears the team is also considering internal options if the club is unable to bring in someone from outside the organization via trade or free agency. (Read more about the team considering internal options from Cardinals.com as well.)
- As the club continues to search for a right-handed player capable of playing first base and possibly the outfield, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports that John Mozeliak says he has a better feel for the market, but that the team remains in “exploratory mode.”
- According to Jenifer Langosch of Cardinals.com, Mozeliak acknowledged Tuesday that the team met with pitcher Lance Lynn’s agent, but didn’t specify what the meeting was about. Langosch added that Lynn is a strong candidate for a contract extension.
- Manager Mike Matheny discussed the team’s offseason moves during a media session at the Winter Meetings on Tuesday. Brian Stull of St. Louis Baseball Weekly provides some of Matheny’s comments.
