The Cardinals may be just over a week away from getting their best hitter of the first half back in their lineup, as manager Mike Matheny said that Matt Carpenter – out since July 6 with an oblique strain – could go out on a rehab assignment this week with the possibility of being activated as soon as August 2, Brian Stull of STL Baseball Weekly and Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com report.
Carpenter, who led the club in doubles, triples, runs, RBIs, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage at the time of his injury (suffered on a check-swing), resumed baseball activities on Friday, and both ran the bases and took batting practice at Busch Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Matheny also said prior to the team’s Sunday night contest against the Dodgers that it’s possible Brandon Moss and Jhonny Peralta will also be activated near the beginning of August. Moss has made significant progress in recent days in his recovery from a left ankle sprain, while Peralta is recovering from a ligament strain in his surgically-repaired left thumb.
