Working his way back from his second quad strain of the season, Matt Holliday went through some reduced-speed running workouts on Saturday, with manager Mike Matheny telling the Post-Dispatch afterward that the left fielder “looked like the exact speed for a home run trot.” Holliday, who’s been hitting for some time now, will continue to slowly increase his running intensity before hopefully being activated in just a few week.
A handful of updates on a few other injured redbirds, with information from Derrick Goold of the Post-Dispatch and J.J. Bailey of KMOV:
ADAMS SPRINTS:
First baseman Matt Adams performed sprints at close to full speed on Saturday as he continues to work his way back from late-May surgery to repair a quad strain.
After recently experiencing a setback with his non-surgically-repaired leg while at the team’s facilities in Florida, the 27-year-old now seems to be back on track in his recovery. He’ll look to return to the active roster before the end of the month.
BELISLE THROWING:
Reliever Matt Belisle (elbow) threw off the mound to a few of his teammates on Friday under the supervision Cardinals coaches, with Matheny offering high praise for the veteran afterwards.
“He looked good,” the skipper said. “He actually looked better as he went. That was a good sign. The test, more than anything else, is how it feels.”
The 35-year-old, who posted a 3.00 ERA over exactly 30 innings before going down with an elbow injury in late-June, responded well from the session and will likely pitch again to some of his rehabbing teammates in the coming days.
