Thought to be making good progress after quad surgery, first baseman Matt Adams had a “minor setback” when he tweaked something in his non-surgically-repaired leg while rehabbing at the organization’s facilities in Florida and has returned to St. Louis to undergo tests and receive treatment.

“We’re back to taking it day by day,” Adams told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It’s nothing too serious. Just running the bases, it got kind of sore.”

Both Adams and manager Mike Matheny still expressed optimism that the 27-year-old slugger, who’s been sidelined since late May, will be able to return to the field this season.

“It’s something we’ve got to take care of before it gets out of control and we’ll revisit it whenever the time’s ready and get back, hopefully, in time to play some games, Adams told reporters. “That was the goal.”

“Sometimes you have setbacks which put you back a bit, but he’s still moving forward very well,” the Cardinals skipper said. “Something just didn’t feel right. It wasn’t anything huge. It was just something you’ve got to slow down for.”

WAINWRIGHT STILL AIMING FOR RETURN THIS SEASON

Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright, who had surgery in late April to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon, is still optimistic about a return this season. The 34-year-old, who has been cleared to run at full speed this week, told MLB.com’s Joe Harris that no one has yet to tell him a return would be impractical.

“No doctors are telling me that it’s impossible (to return this season),” Wainwright said. “That’s the story that everybody keeps writing that I haven’t heard yet, and I think I would know. If a doctor had told me that, then I would have shut this down a whole long time ago and say, ‘Hey, I’ll see you next year.’ But no one’s told me that.”

GRICHUK HITS IN THE CAGE

Outfielder Randal Grichuk, a Rookie of the Year candidate when he went down with muscle and ligament strains in his elbow in mid-August, hit in the cage on Monday for the first time since the suffering the injury.

Grichuk, who believes he’ll be back on the field before the end of the regular season, expressed cautious optimism to Rick Hummel of the Post-Dispatch.

“It felt good. (But) I didn’t feel anything hitting when I hurt it.”

The 24-year-old expects to begin throwing later this week.

HOLLIDAY, WALDEN LATEST

Matheny told Hummel that Matt Holliday, rehabbing from a second quad strain this season, is “continuing to push a little further with his running. There’s a percentage that he’s at. But he’s moving well.”

Reliever Jordan Walden said he’s “getting closer” and still hopes to pitch this season. The 26-year-old, sidelined since April with shoulder issues, has begun playing catch and hopes to throw off a mound before long.
