Redbird reliever Jordan Walden has been cleared to begin strengthening exercises after an exam of his injured right shoulder showed healing, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Walden tore a muscle in his throwing shoulder at the end of April and has been shut down for the past month. He recently threw a weighted ball into a trampoline for the first time and hopes to begin playing catch soon. More than three weeks into his recovery, Walden is still on schedule with his original 6-10 weeks timetable, however he’s doubtful to be ready for big league action before July.
“My shoulder tells me when it’s ready,” Walden told Goold.
Acquired from the Braves along with Jason Heyward in the trade that sent Shelby Miller to Atlanta, Walden, 27, had allowed just one run in 10 1/3 innings of work (0.87 ERA) this season while pitching primarily in the eighth inning as the setup man for closer Trevor Rosenthal.
