The Cardinals are hoping that Carlos Martinez’s breakout season did not not come to a sudden end on Friday night, when the right-hander walked off the field into the dugout with his glove over his face just six pitches into his start against the Brewers.
The team later announced that Martinez exited with right shoulder tightness, something the 24-year-old admitted after the game had been bothering him since his last start in Chicago.
“I didn’t say anything because I thought it was normal,” Martinez told MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch through translator Jon Jay. “I just wanted to pitch through it.”
Martinez added that as soon as he threw his first pitch Friday night, he “knew there was something wrong.”
Initial tests from the team’s training staff indicated only shoulder tightness, but more will be known when the team receives the results of Martinez’s MRI some time on Saturday.
In his first full year starting in the majors, Martinez is in the midst of a outstanding season, posting a 14-7 record with a 3.01 ERA in 29 starts this year. Even more impressive, the Cardinals are 22-6 in Martinez’s starts this season.
Martinez said he still believes he’ll be able to make another start — he was only scheduled to make one more this year — before the end of the regular season.
“I feel like I will make another start and I’m comfortable knowing I’m going to work hard and do whatever it takes,” he said Friday night. “I don’t feel a lot of pain. I just feel a little bit of weakness, but I’m not too, too concerned about it.”
More will be known on Martinez’s status later on Saturday. Check back here and follow @STLBBToday on Twitter for updates.
