The Cardinals were dealt a potentially serious blow on top of a devastating walkoff loss on Thursday after Matt Holliday exited in the 10th inning with what was diagnosed as a fractured right thumb, which he suffered when he was hit by a pitch by Cubs reliever Mike Montgomery.
Holliday will be placed on the disabled list after X-rays revealed the fracture, according to MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch, although there was no immediate indication from the club on how long he’s expected to be sidelined.
The veteran outfielder told reporters, including Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, that he is scheduled to visit a hand specialist in Chicago on Friday.
Regardless of the outcome of that visit, it appears the redbirds will be without their starting left fielder for a significant period of time.
More should be known on Friday.
