As the Winter Meetings in Nashville wrap up on Thursday, here’s the latest Cardinals-related news/notes/reports you need to know…
INTEREST IN CHEN, LEAKE UPDATE
CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported that the Cardinals, along with the Giants, are interested in free agent starter Wei-Yin Chen, according to sources. The 30-year-old left-hander posted an 11-8 record with a career-best 3.34 ERA over 191 1/3 innings for the Orioles last season, and has been one of the most consistently productive pitchers in the American League since coming over from Japan in 2012. In four years with Baltimore, Chen pitched to a 3.72 ERA while striking out seven batters per nine innings. MLB Trade Rumors projects a five-year, $80 million deal for Chen.
The Cardinals have also been rumored to be among the teams checking in on free agent Mike Leake, and while the righty was reportedly close to a deal with the Nationals, their interest in him has cooled off, Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports. The Giants, who signed starter Jeff Samardzija roughly a week ago, have also been reported to have interest in the 28-year-old, who posted a solid 3.70 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 192 innings (30 starts) this past season between Cincinnati and San Francisco.
REYNOLDS TO COLORADO
Heyman also reported Wednesday night that Mark Reynolds, who spent the 2015 season wearing the birds on the bat on a one-year deal, is likely to have a deal completed with the Colorado Rockies by the end of the Winter Meetings on Thursday. Yahoo Sports’ Tim Brown reports a one-year deal is likely for the 32-year-old.
Reynolds hit .230 with 13 home runs, 21 doubles and 121 strikeouts in 140 games with the redbirds last season after agreeing to a one-year, $2 million contract last December. The slugger, who’s known for his immense power and enormous strikeout rates, has slugged 56 home runs in 405 games over the last three seasons, striking out 397 times.
Although he appeared primarily at first base, Reynolds also spent time at third base and in the corner outfield spots.
CARDS CLAIM LEFTY AQUINO FROM INDIANS
The Cardinals have claimed left-hander Jayson Aquino from the Cleveland Indians, the team announced on Wednesday. Aquino, 23, posted a 3.28 ERA over 137.1 innings pitched at the High-A level in 2015. Designated for assignment by Cleveland last week, Aquino will be added to the Cardinals’ 40-man roster.
