A quick look at some minor Cardinals news from Thursday…
- Mikolas’ return: Cardinals president of baseball operations told reporters on Thursday that starter Miles Mikolas will remain on the paternity list through Friday before rejoining the team on Saturday and starting in Sunday’s series finale against the Cubs. Mikolas’ wife Lauren gave birth to twins on Monday.
- Wacha’s recovery: Cardinals starter Michael Wacha, sidelined roughly a mouth with an oblique strain, has yet to begin throwing, MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch reports. Barring any setbacks, it would appear unlikely that Wacha would pitch for the Cardinals before mid-August.
- Carlos Martinez a trade chip?: Following recent media speculation that the Cardinals could consider trading starter Carlos Martinez prior to the trade deadline if their struggles continue, Mozeliak told reporters (including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Ben Frederickson) that he doesn’t envision trading away starters. Mozeliak said that it “would have to be a very special-type deal” for the team to trade Martinez.
- Goold: Cards not in running for Britton: Following a few notable trades involving relievers in the past few days (Brad Hand, Jesse Chavez), Derrick Goold of the Post-Dispatch tweeted Thursday that he was told the Cardinals aren’t currently in pursuit of another reliever believed to be on the market, Orioles closer Zach Britton. Britton is set to reach free agency after the season, and Goold wrote that “[a] rental doesn’t seem [the Cardinals’] style this year.”
