With just one day remaining until Tuesday’s trade deadline, the Cardinals have already completed two deals, acquiring three relievers.
The redbirds dealt Sam Tuivailala to the Mariners for minor league pitcher Seth Elledge on Friday, and on Saturday night shipped first baseman Luke Voit to the Yankees for left-hander Chasen Shreve and right-hander Giovanny Gallegos.
It remains to be seen whether the team will strike another deal before the trade deadline. We’ll keep track of the latest news and reports involving the Cardinals, as they come in, below:
GOOLD: CARDINALS OPEN TO DISCUSSING NORRIS, J. MARTINEZ
11:30 am CT: Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Monday morning that the Cardinals are “open to discussing offers” for closer Bud Norris and first baseman/outfielder Jose Martinez.
Norris, 33, is pitching on a one-year, $3 million deal. The right-hander has posted a 3.14 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over 43 innings while picking up 20 saves.
Martinez, meanwhile, has been one of the redbirds’ best hitters this season, but has cost the team mightily with his poor defense. The 30-year-old is hitting .294/.359.461 with 13 home runs and a team-high 59 RBI in 98 games.
