After using six relievers following Lance Lynn’s rough 2 1/3 inning outing against the Cubs on Monday night, the Cardinals added another arm to their bullpen on Tuesday, as hard-throwing right-hander Sam Tuivailala was recalled prior to Tuesday’s game.
Mike Matheny told MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch that the move was coming following the team’s 9-0 shutout loss in game one of the series.
It’s the fifth promotion of the season for the 22-year-old, who gets the call following the conclusion of AAA Memphis’s season. He most recently appeared in the majors at the end of August while Trevor Rosenthal was away on paternity leave, throwing one scoreless inning against the Giants. The addition of Tuivailala, who posted a 1.60 ERA over 43 AAA appearances with 17 saves, will give the Cardinals an 11-man bullpen.
Tuivailala wears uniform #64.
NO OTHER PROMOTIONS PLANNED
Matheny also noted that as of Monday night, there were no other player promotions planned, meaning that Marco Gonzales and Nick Greenwood (who were both in the big-league earlier this month) would not be returning to the majors again this season.
