Back on April 27, general manager John Mozeliak addressed the media concerning starter Adam Wainwright, who had just recently officially been diagnosed with a torn left Achilles tendon.

“As far as this year goes, he’s done,” the Cards GM said.

Just over four months later, after surgery to repair the injury, the Cardinals ace is looking to defy the odds and return to the first place Cardinals as they push toward their fifth consecutive playoff birth.

Wainwright threw his fourth throwing session off the bullpen mound prior to Monday night’s game against the Cubs, which was a bit more extensive than his previous three, Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The 34-year-old, who drew some applause from his teammates after the session, told Hummel that his progress thus far “feels good.”

As for any limitations, Wainwright said he still has a few more tests on his leg to pass.

“The only thing holding me back is the strength in my calf and some tests I have to pass in the weight room, based on the strength in my lower leg.”

It’s still not clear if Wainwright could potentially be ready in time to contribute this season, or if the team would even risk re-injury with him if he is. The veteran has stated throughout his rehab process he at least wants the Cardinals to be forced to consider him come mid-to-late September.
