Adam Wainwright’s improbable return to the major league roster is now almost upon us, as the veteran threw another simulated game on Monday in what he believes was his final test before being activated.
After the throwing session, the Cardinals ace, sidelined since April after having surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon, went through a series of fielding plays to show he could handle the defensive side of his position, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Wainwright completed his workout by running a few pickoff plays involving rundowns.
Following the session, the three-time All-Star told Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest that he’s ready to pitch in a game situation. According to Goold, assuming Wainwright shows up at PNC on Tuesday without any issues, he will be cleared for game action by the team’s medical staff and could be on the mound as soon as Wednesday.
