Just over one week after suffering a “slight ligament tear” in his left thumb, Yadier Molina will not be back behind the plate for the Cardinals before the postseason. After meeting with a doctor, the seven-time Gold Glove award winner was prescribed another week of rest, ruling him out for the rest of the 2015 regular season, MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch reports.

The 33-year-old Molina was injured in a September 20 game against the Cubs when first baseman Anthony Rizzo slid into home on a play at the plate.

Manager Mike Matheny told reporters, including Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest, that Molina’s thumb will be reevaluated on Sunday or Monday, at which point the team will have a better idea about whether he’ll be able to play in the postseason.

“Obviously we were hoping for better news, but in the scheme of things we’re just going to have to remain patient,” GM John Mozeliak told Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Depending on where we end up in October could dictate if there is still a possibility.”

Molina will remain in a splint for now.

Tony Cruz, who’s hit .273 (6-22) with two doubles and a triple since Molina went down, will continue to fill in behind the dish.

Mozeliak said the team is still hoping for the best in terms of Molina.

“Frankly, it’s more about the clock. At some point you just run out of time. Every day is a healing day. We always hold out hope. He’s the type of player worth holding out for.”
