Just hours after placing Aledmys Diaz on the disabled list amid a series of roster moves, the Cardinals were dealt another major blow.
Mere minutes after the team’s walkoff loss to the Cincinnati Reds, news broke that left-handed reliever Tyler Lyons was headed to DL due to a stress reaction in his right knee.
Lyons was diagnosed with the injury after having a scan done Tuesday afternoon, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The Cardinals officially placed Lyons on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday morning, recalling left-hander Dean Kiekhefer – who was just sent down to make room for Zach Duke – from AAA Memphis.
A reliable and versatile arm out of the bullpen for the redbirds this season, the 28-year-old Lyons pitched to a 3.38 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 48 innings.
In three stints with the Cardinals this season, Kiekhefer has posted a 4.85 ERA and 10/2 strikeout/walk ratio over 13 innings.
Also worth noting is that the series of recent moves made by the Cardinals has led to the promotion of pitching prospect Luke Weaver from AA Springfield to AAA Memphis. The 22-year-old right-hander has posted a 6-3 record with a 1.40 ERA and 0.95 WHIP at AA this season, showing outstanding control (10 walks/88 strikeouts in 77 innings). General manager John Mozeliak told reporters, including MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch, that Weaver could be an option for the Cardinals bullpen some time this season.
