The suddenly injury-plagued Cardinals appear to have avoided another major blow on Friday after starter Michael Wacha exited in the seventh inning after taking a comebacker off his right foot.
A line drive off the bat of Jonathan Villar sent Wacha to the ground in obvious pain and the ball over towards third baseman Greg Garcia, who made play to retire the Brewers’ shortstop.
After talking with manager Mike Matheny and a trainer, Wacha, who was already at 97 pitches, exited the field under his own power, while rookie Matt Bowman took over on the mound.
The Cardinals announced a few innings later that Wacha left with a right heel contusion and is expected to be fine.
Wacha surrendered three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings while striking out eight and walking two before his exit.
Two innings later, the Cardinals watched as Trevor Rosenthal walked gingerly off the field with what was later described as hamstring spasms. An update on his condition is expected on Saturday.
