The Cardinals’ co-leader in home runs could return in just a matter of days, as first baseman/outfielder Brandon Moss is slated to begin a rehab assignment Thursday night with the AA Springfield Cardinals, Mark Saxon of ESPN.com was among those to report on Wednesday.

Moss, who has been sidelined since early July with a sprained left ankle, is batting third and playing first base in his first rehab start on Thursday, according to Derek Shore of TheCardinalNation.com. The 32-year-old slugger said prior to the game that he’ll be eased into action before playing a full nine innings, and will play five innings on Thursday before seven on Friday, Shore reports.

It’s unclear when Moss is expected to be activated, but a return some time early next week seems reasonable assuming he doesn’t experience any setbacks.

Spending time at first base and the corner outfield spots for the Cardinals this season, Moss was hitting .251/.340/.562 with 17 home runs and 40 RBI prior to his injury.
