Jaime Garcia to start Saturday on short rest

Cardinals fans will have to wait a bit longer to see the organization’s top prospect pitch in the major leagues.

Two days after Alex Reyes was pulled just three innings into his start for AAA Memphis as insurance to start Saturday for the big-league club, manager Mike Matheny announced Thursday afternoon that Jaime Garcia will make that start on short rest.

Garcia, who allowed two earned runs over five innings against the Mets on Tuesday, will be making his first career start on three days rest after throwing 77 pitches in his last outing.

The Cardinals’ original plan – after a rainout forced a doubleheader on Tuesday – was for lefty Tyler Lyons to come out of the bullpen for the start on Saturday, with Reyes and veteran Jerome Williams serving as backup options. But on Thursday Matheny told reporters, including Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, that the decision to start Garcia was made after considering the role Lyons could have in relief in the two games headed into that start.

As for Reyes, the Cardinals could still very well promote the electric right-hander in the near future (possibly for a bullpen role), although that could depend on any moves the club makes leading up to Monday’s non-waiver Trade Deadline.
