The Cardinals appear to have run out of patience with Greg Holland, as Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweeted Friday morning that the team is expected to designate the struggling veteran reliever for assignment on Friday.
The move is expected to clear room for pitching prospect Dakota Hudson on the 25-man roster, according to Goold.
Coming off a 41-save season with the Rockies in 2017, Holland signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Cardinals in late March.
The 32-year-old struggled out of the gate this season for the redbirds, lost the closer’s role before picking up a save, spent more than three weeks on the disabled list with a hip impingement, and struggled since his return in mid-June.
On the season, Holland owns an 0-2 record, 7.92 ERA, 4.56 FIP, and 2.24 WHIP across 25 innings.
Hudson, meanwhile, was pulled from his start for AAA Memphis on Wednesday night after just one inning, and received hugs from his manager and teammates upon exiting, leading to immediate speculation he would be promoted.
The Cardinals’ 4th-ranked prospect by MLB Pipeline, Hudson is 13-3 with a 2.50 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 111 2/3 innings at AAA this season.
