Cardinals pitching prospect Dakota Hudson was pulled from his start for AAA Memphis on Wednesday night after just one inning, leading to immediate speculation that the 23-year-old could be coming up to the majors.

In a tweet, the Salt Lake Bees, the Angels’ AAA affiliate who the Memphis Redbirds were playing, wrote that Hudson received hugs from manager Stubby Clapp and teammates upon exiting the game.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, meanwhile, tweeted Wednesday night that Hudson appears “on the verge of [a] likely promotion.” A team official confirmed to Goold that Hudson was not injured, but declined to say if he was promoted.

Heading into Wednesday’s start, Hudson, the Cardinals 3rd-ranked prospect by MLB Pipeline, was 13-2 with a 2.36 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 110 2/3 innings at AAA this season.

More to come. Stay tuned.
