Just hours after Matt Holliday fell to his knees in the Cardinals dugout after straining his quad for the second time this season, a major trade rumor has surfaced involving the team, as Chris Cotillo of SB Nation’s MLB Daily Dish reports that, according to sources, the Cardinals and Cleveland Indians are believed to be making progress on a “significant” trade. Although Cotillo reports it’s not clear what Indians players could be involved, a source did confirm to him that the two sides had discussions surrounding first baseman/corner outfielder Brandon Moss. A trade is “likely close,” per Cotillo (as of early Thursday morning).
According to Cotillo, the supposed deal also likely involves Cardinals lefty pitching prospect Rob Kaminsky, who was recently ranked as the organization’s third-best prospect by MLB Pipeline. The 20-year-old was the Cardinals first round pick (28th overall) in the 2013 draft and is currently pitching at High-A Palm Beach, where he has a 2.09 ERA with a 79/28 K/BB ratio in 17 starts.
Acquired from the Athletics this past offseason, Moss, 31, is playing on a one-year, $6.5 million contract, but is under team control through 2016. A veteran of nine years in the majors, Moss is is hitting just .217 this year, but does have 15 home runs and 49 RBI.
