UPDATE: Holliday was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, with infielder Greg Garcia taking his place on the active roster in a corresponding move. Read more here.

Previous report:

Less than two weeks after returning from a grade two right quadriceps strain, Matt Holliday pulled up lame while attempting to beat out an inning-ending double play in the first inning of Wednesday’s series finale against the Reds, limped into the dugout, and fell to his knees as trainers rushed to his aide.

The initial announcement form the Cardinals is that Holliday suffered another quad strain, which is by definition a tear, but the veteran left fielder will be re-evaluated on Thursday. Manager Mike Matheny said after the game that Holliday’s injury is in the same spot as before, and he had an MRI Wednesday night (via KMOX’s Alex Ferrario). The results of that MRI will be released some time on Thursday.

The 35-year-old initially strained the muscle while chasing after a foul ball in Colorado back on June 8, and ended up spending 31 days on the disabled list before being activated following the All-Star break on July 7 despite the fact that he had not fully regained his mobility.

Mark Reynolds entered the game at first base to replace Holliday in the lineup, while Stephen Piscotty moved from first to left field.

Since returning from the injury, Holliday is batting just .214  with one home run and 5 RBI. Overall, Holliday is hitting .290 with four homers and 31 RBIs on the season.

UPDATE 7/30 10:30 am: Just hours following Holliday’s injury, the Cardinals announced a trade to add a power bat to the offensively-struggling team. The team has acquired first baseman/corner outfielder Brandon Moss from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for left-handed pitching prospect Rob Kaminsky (read more about that here).

The results of Holliday’s MRI will be announced some time on Thursday. Regardless of the severity, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets that the team says it will not pursue any more outfielders after the acquisition of Moss.
