In order to clear room for top prospect Stephen Piscotty’s promotion to the big-leagues, the Cardinals designated AAA Memphis veteran utility-man Ty Kelly for assignment on Tuesday.

Originally a 13th-round pick by the Orioles back in 2009, Kelly was traded to the Cardinals by the Mariners in exchange for minor-league pitcher Sam Gaviglio back in November of last year. In parts of four seasons at the AAA level Kelly is a .261/.381/.379 hitter, although he’s struggled to just a .203/.317/.287 batting line this season with just 2 home runs and 21 RBI.

The 27-year-old spent time at all three outfield spots as well as second and third base this season.
