Although the seven-time Gold Glove catcher is still not 100 percent in his recovery from a left thumb sprain, the Cardinals are still hopeful that Yadier Molina will be on the team’s roster when they begin postseason play this weekend in the NLDS.

After visiting a hand specialist in St. Louis on Monday, Molina will have a special splint build in an attempt to allow him to both hit and catch, two activities he’ll attempt to do in the next few days.

In a statement released by the club on Monday, GM John Mozeliak said the team is “still optimistic that Yadier will be on our postseason roster.”

The 33-year-old was injured more than two weeks ago in a September 20 game against the Cubs, when first baseman Anthony Rizzo slid into home on a play at the plate.

An All-Star for the seventh time in 2015, Molina finished the regular season with a .270 average, four home runs, and 60 RBI over 136 games.

The National League Division Series kicks off with Game 1 at Busch Stadium at 5:45 pm Central Time Friday evening, with the Cardinals set to face the winner of Wednesday’s Wild Card game between the Cubs and Pirates.
