Cardinals Trade Deadline Blog: Tracking the latest rumors and reports

Just as they did last season with the additions of Steve Cishek and Jonathan Broxton, the Cardinals have bolstered their bullpen at the trade deadline, acquiring veteran left-handed reliever Zach Duke from the Chicago White Sox into exchange for minor league outfielder Charlie Tilson (read more about the trade here).

With mere hours remaining until Monday’s 3 pm CT non-waiver trade deadline, there’s still time for John Mozeliak to strike another deal. We’ll continue to keep track of the latest rumors and reports involving the redbirds as they come in below:

MOZELIAK: CARDINALS NOT ACTIVELY PURSUING ANY MORE MOVES RIGHT NOW

7/31, 1:05 pm CT: After acquiring reliever Zach Duke from the White Sox, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the club is not actively pursuing any other moves at this time. Mozeliak stopped short of saying the redbirds are done making moves, saying that’s a tough word to use with more than 24 hours before the trade deadline, according to Goold.

CARDS ACQUIRE VETERAN LEFTY RELIEVER DUKE FROM WHITE SOX

7/31, 11:44 am CT: The Cardinals acquired left-handed reliever Zach Duke from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league outfielder Charlie Tilson, the team announced. [FULL STORY]

FANRAG SPORTS: CARDINALS HAVE SCOUT AT HELLICKSON’S SAT. START

7/30, 8:50 pm CT: Sources told Robert Murray of FanRag Sports that the Cardinals are among many teams with scouts watching Jeremy Hellickson’s start Saturday night in Atlanta. The 29-year-old Phillies right-hander, who will be a free agent at season’s end, has pitched to a 7-7 record with a 3.65 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 21 starts this season. Murray reports that scouts from at least eight other teams are attending Hellickson’s start. UPDATE 10:25 pm CT: Hellickson gave up three runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings against the Braves on Saturday, picking up his 8th win of the season.

ESPN: CARDS AMONG TEAMS “MOST AGGRESSIVE” IN BULLPEN MARKET

7/30, 8:21 pm CT: ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick reported Saturday morning that he was told by a baseball executive that the Cardinals, Indians, Nationals (who later in the day acquired Mark Melancon), Giants, Mets, Pirates, and Dodgers, are the “most aggressive teams in (the) bullpen market.”

FANRAG SPORTS: REDBIRDS AMONG CANDIDATES TO ACQUIRE LAA’S SMITH

7/30, 8:21 pm CT: Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reported Friday evening that the Cardinals are among the possible candidates to trade for Angels reliever Joe Smith. Heyman wrote on Thursday that the redbirds are in the market for a late-inning arm to add to the bullpen, and had checked in on Smith (read more here).
