In an article on the Cardinals’ signing of Lance Lynn, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch provides some information on the team’s strategy on the pitching market:

Privately, the Cardinals have maintained that they can be patient, evaluating what they have in place before going fishing for a starter if and when they see a need.

Mozeliak said Thursday he has not been “active” in the market for pitchers.

“I feel good with what we have,” Mozeliak said. “When you’re discussing a starting rotation, obviously you take nothing for granted. There’s an element of vulnerability that can happen at any time. We’re in a good position.”

Meanwhile, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny discussed the team’s rotation on MLB Network Friday morning:

Here’s a look at more news and reports on the Cardinals:

  • Somewhat contradicting the previous news, Joel Sherman of the New York Post said on MLB Network Friday morning that the expectation from other executives is that the Cardinals “are adding a big starting pitcher before spring training.” A clip of Sherman discussing this can be seen here (via B.J. Rains).
  • On a related note, Detroit Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrokski said Friday “I would say no, probably not” about bringing back 2013 Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer. The Cardinals, Yankees, and Dodgers are believed to be the current front-runners for Scherzer according to The Detroit Free Press.
  • Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports discusses how the Philadelphia Phillies may value pitcher Cole Hamels too much, and takes a look at the cases of the Rangers, Red Sox, Padres, and Cardinals on acquiring him. On the Cardinals: “Would the Phillies accept a package headed by righty Carlos Martinez and outfielder Randal Grichuk? The better question might be whether the Cardinals would offer such a package. Like the Red Sox, they remain deeply protective of their prospects.” Read Rosenthal’s full article here.
  • In other news, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reported Friday morning that Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez, who is the likely front-runner in the battle for the team’s fifth rotation spot, started and earned the win in a Dominican Winter League postseason game Thursday night. Martinez went 5 2/3 innings while giving up just one run, striking out eight, and issuing just one walk.
  • In his latest article, Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch discusses what the Cardinals need from new right fielder Jason Heyward. Miklasz questions whether Heyward’s power will return and if he could require a platoon partner against left-handing pitching among other topics. Miklasz also discusses how the 3-year, $22 million signing of Lance Lynn is a smart move in this article.
  • Derrick Goold of the Post-Dispatch provides the details of the Peter Bourjos signing in this article, in which he discusses how Bourjos’ hip injury affected him last year and the role Bourjos appears to be in line for in 2015.
  • Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com discusses how Matt Carpenter and Matt Adams are “rocks for (the) Cards at the corners” in the latest part of her Around the Horn series, in which she takes a position-by-position look at the team’s projected starters and depth headed into the 2015 season.
  • Finally, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest points out that Jason Heyward, Kolten Wong, and GM John Mozeliak will all be on the Hot Stove Live program Friday night at Ballpark Village. The program starts at 6 p.m. on Fox Sports Midwest and KMOX Radio 1120 AM and Cardinals broadcaster Dan McLaughlin will serve as host.
