Carlos Martinez exits with right shoulder sprain

Carlos Martinez’s return from the disabled list was cut short Monday night, as the right-hander exited after four-plus strong innings with yet another injury.

After hitting 97+ mph on the radar gun in the early innings, Martinez topped out at just 90 mph in the fifth inning before exiting with the team’s training staff and manager Mike Shildt. Shortly after the inning ended, the Cardinals announced that the right-hander departed with a right shoulder strain.

Rookie Daniel Poncedeleon took over for Martinez on the mound.

Martinez was placed on the disabled list on July 21 with an oblique strain, and previously missed most of May with a right lat strain.

In just over 100 innings pitched this season, the 26-year-old owns a 6-6 record, 3.41 ERA and 1.38 WHIP with 98 strikeouts.

More to come.
