One day after exiting after five innings as a precaution due to left hip tightness, Matt Carpenter is in the Cardinals starting lineup on Sunday as the redbirds look to take three out of four from the Brewers.

Carpenter told reporters after the game that the injury was “nothing serious” and he could have played through it, and Mike Matheny also emphasized that the decision to remove the third baseman was just to be “very proactive and cautious.”

Sunday’s Cardinals lineup features Randal Grichuk in left field (batting cleanup), Matt Adams at first base, and Greg Garcia getting the start at shortstop against Brewers’ rookie right-hander Tyler Cravy (0-8, 6.21 ERA this season):

The Cardinals will counter with veteran John Lackey, who’s in search of his 14th win this year (13-9, 2.74 ERA).

First pitch is slated for 1:15 CT  on Fox Sports Midwest and the Cardinals Radio Network.

Other Notes:

  • Mike Matheny confirmed before Sunday’s series finale that Lance Lynn, Michael Wacha, and Tyler Lyons will be the Cardinals’ starters for the team’s three-game series in Pittsburgh next week.
