From the St. Louis chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America on Facebook:

“Joe Maddon of the Chicago Cubs was named BBWAA National League Manager of the Year tonight. Cardinals skipper Mike Matheny finished second in the voting.

Maddon received 18 of 30 first place votes as well as 11 second place and a single third place vote. Matheny received 9 first place votes, 12 second place votes and 6 third place votes. Terry Collins of the New York Mets finished third.

St. Louis media votes were split. Joe Ostermeier, the chapter chairman, voted: Matheny, Maddon, Collins. R.B. Fallstrom from the Associated Press voted: Maddon, Matheny, Collins.”

The honor for Maddon marks the third time the skipper has been named Manager of the Year, just one shy of the all-time record shared by Bobby Cox and former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa.

Despite a roster decimated by injuries to key players, Matheny led the Cardinals to a 100-win season and their third straight NL Central division title in 2015. Matheny has guided the redbirds to the postseason in each of his first four seasons as manager while posting the besting winning percentage in the major leagues.
