After an odd double switch in the eighth inning of Sunday’s game against the Marlins left Jason Heyward in center field for the first time since 2013 and Randal Grichuk out of the game, the Cardinals announced after the team’s 6-4 loss that Grichuk was removed due to tightness in his right elbow.

Manager Mike Matheny told reporters after the redbirds’ series finale against Miami that the injury first bothered Grichuk during the game, and the team did not want to risk any further injury.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Grichuk will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the issue. It’s not yet clear how long the 24-year-old Rookie of the Year candidate may be sidelined.
