Matt Holliday’s return from his second quad strain this season appears to be just around the corner, as the veteran outfielder went through baserunning drills along with Matt Adams and Kolten Wong prior to the Cardinals’ Friday night game in Cincinnati, MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch reports.

Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reported Thursday that running the bases was the final major hurdle for Holliday to overcome, as is common in rehab from a leg injury. The 35-year-old said just a few days ago that he expects to be activated some time during the team’s three city road trip. It now appears Holliday is likely to be activated in the next week, though the Cardinals will likely ease him back into action, especially in the field.

On Thursday night, Adams appeared in a game for the first time since undergoing surgery for a quad strain in May, collecting a base hit down the right field line in the ninth inning before being lifted for pinch runner Randal Grichuk. With the addition of Brandon Moss, the return of Randal Grichuk, the presence of Mark Reynolds, and Stephen Piscotty’s great performance, the Cardinals can afford to ease Adams back into game action.

WONG REMAINS OUT OF LINEUP

Kolten Wong remains out of the starting lineup for the fifth consecutive game due to a left calf strain he believes he suffered on Sunday. The second baseman told Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest on Thursday that he was still experiencing “a little tightness” in the leg but was hoping to return to the lineup sometime during this weekend’s series against the Reds. As mentioned, Wong participated in baserunning drills on Friday.

Greg Garcia will get the nod at second base for the second game of a four game series in Cincinnati, with Matt Carpenter, who’s been handling second base the last few days, shifting back over to third:
