Injury Updates: Wong dealing with calf strain, Holliday hopes to be activated on road trip, more

Kolten Wong

Second baseman Kolten Wong, who’s been out of the Cardinals starting lineup since Sunday due to what was considered calf tightness, acknowledged to MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch on Thursday that an MRI revealed he’s actually dealing with a left calf strain. Although the injury was more severe than initially believed, the 24-year-old did tell Langosch that he ran on Thursday without any problems and hopes to be back in the lineup sometime this weekend.

“There’s still a little tightness there. But it’s one of those things where I think another day and it should be fine,” Wong told Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest prior to Thursday night’s game.

A few other injury updates…

– Rehabbing from his second quad strain of the season, Matt Holliday told Hayes on Thursday that he thinks he’ll be activated some time on the Cardinals’ three city road trip. The veteran outfielder said that he’ll do base-running drills on Friday, which is his final major remaining obstacle in his rehab.

– Matt Belisle, sidelined since late-June due to an elbow injury, threw another simulated game on Wednesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The team will wait to see how the veteran reliever responds from the session before potentially activating him as soon as Friday.

“I feel like I broke through those barriers,” Belisle told Langosch, “and now it’s go time.”

– Along with Holliday, Adam Wainwright is also traveling with the team on their remaining road trips as he continues his steady return following surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon. The 34-year-old, who threw another bullpen on Wednesday, continues to hold out hope on returning to the mound in the majors this season.
