One loss away from elimination, the Cardinals will turn to postseason veteran John Lackey on short rest to start Game 4 of the National League Division Series Tuesday afternoon against the Cubs and right-hander Jason Hammel.

After re-agravating his thumb injury on a swing Monday night, Yadier Molina, who missed the final 13 games of the regular season after straining a ligament his his left thumb on a play at the plate, was scratched from the Cardinals lineup for the do-or-die contest. Tony Cruz will draw the start at catcher, batting eighth.

Randal Grichuk will hit sixth and play center field after Tommy Pham manned the position on Monday.

In other lineup news, one day after exiting Game 3 with hamstring tightness, Cubs shortstop Addison Russell is not in the team’s lineup as they look to clinch their first postseason series victory at home.

Starting Lineups (updated):

Cardinals – Matt Carpenter 3B, Stephen Piscotty 1B, Matt Holliday LF, Jason Heyward RF, Jhonny Peralta SS, Randal Grichuk CF, Kolten Wong 2B, Tony Cruz, John Lackey SP

Cubs – Dexter Fowler CF, Jorge Soler RF, Kris Bryant 3B, Anthony Rizzo 1B, Starlin Castro 2B, Kyle Schwarber LF, Miguel Montero C, Jason Hammel SP, Javier Baez SS

Pitching Matchup:

The 36-year-old Lackey picked up his eighth postseason victory in the series opener, allowing just two hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings to lead the redbirds to a 4-0 win.

“Physically? I’m not guarding against nothing–I’m gonna go get it,” Lackey told reporters Monday night. “Pitch counts are out the window this time of year. It’s competing and win the game…The past has nothing to do with tomorrow, we’ve got to go out and do it again.”

“If you want me to get all dramatic and stuff, it ain’t time for that,” Lackey added. “It’s time to go to work.”

In 22 career postseason appearances, the right-hander boasts a 8-5 record with a 2.90 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 124 1/3 innings pitched. It will be the third time in his career Lackey gets the nod on three days rest.

Hammel, 33, posted 10-7 record with a 3.74 ERA over 170 2/3 innings during the regular season. The right-hander has a 5.97 career ERA in seven starts against the redbirds.
