The Cardinals are reportedly considering an attempt to lock up their most promising young pitcher.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the club is weighing the possibility of offering Carlos Martinez a long-term contract extension.

In his second full season as a big-league starter, Martinez has stepped up as the most consistent pitcher on the Cardinals staff, posting a 7-6 record with a 2.90 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 16 starts thus far this year. Across 282 innings since the beginning of last season, the 24-year-old right-hander owns a 21-13 record with a 2.97 ERA and a 2.78 strikeout/walk ratio.

SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo hears that talks between the Cardinals and Martinez’s agent have not yet begun. Martinez is under team control through 2019.
