Despite the Cardinals’ acquisition of former Marlins’ closer Steve Cishek on Friday in exchange for minor league right-hander Kyle Barraclogh, general manager John Mozeliak has reportedly still been exploring the market for relievers.

According to a report from MLB.com’s Tom Singer, Detroit Tigers closer Joakim Soria was on the “wish-list” of the Cardinals before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for power-hitting minor league shortstop JaCoby Jones on Thursday (read more on the trade from MLBTradeRumors.com).

The Pirates, who sat 4.5 games back of the Cardinals in the NL Central headed into play Thursday, will add Soria to a mix of late-inning relievers including Jared Hughes, Tony Watson and closer Mark Melancon, who’s already tallied more the 30 saves this season.

If John Mozeliak was really interested in Soria, it stands to reason he has been and/or still is monitoring the market for bullpen help. Something to keep in mind with the trade deadline now under 24 hours away.
