While injuries continue to pile up for the redbirds, the team did receive some encouraging news on Friday regarding one of their top relievers.
According to Mark Saxon of ESPN.com, doctors have cleared left-hander Kevin Siegrist, currently on the disabled list with mononucleosis, to resume baseball activities after a test showed that his enlarged spleen had returned to its normal size.
Siegrist, who’s been sidelined since the end of June due to the illness, will throw a few bullpen sessions over the All-Star break next week, GM John Mozeliak told Saxon, and could be activated as soon as the Cardinals return to play after the break on July 15 at home, assuming no setbacks occur.
The 26-year-old Siegrist was 5-2 with a 2.78 ERA in 35 appearances as a setup man for the Cardinals this season before landing on the DL.
