General manager John Mozeliak remains confident the Cardinals will have seven-time Gold Glove catcher Yadier Molina on their roster when the team opens up the NLDS on Friday in St. Louis.

“I suspect no matter what he’s going to find a what to be a part of this, it just might really come down to how he’ll be used,” Mozeliak told MLB Network Radio on Tuesday.

The positive words from the GM come just one day after the team released a statement in which Mozeliak said the team is “still optimistic that Yadier will be on our postseason roster.”

Mozeliak said that Molina would be more uncomfortable swinging the bat upon his return, rather than catching.

“I think from just a pure defensive standpoint, he could do the job. It’s just how comfortable is he holding a bat.”

CHAMPIONSHIP DROUGHTS

Following the Astros’ 3-0 win over the Yankees in Tuesday night’s AL Wild Card Game, every team remaining in the postseason, with the exception of the Cardinals, has a championship drought of at least 22 years. Of those eight other teams, the Blue Jays were the last team to win the World Series, most recently accomplishing the feat back in 1993.
